DESCRIPTION:

 

The Blue Throat Triggerfish (Xanthichthys auromarginatus), also known as the Gilded or Bluechin Triggerfish, is a captivating semi-aggressive marine species prized for its unique blue throat patch and elegantly edged yellow fins. Males display vibrant blue cheeks, while females remain more subtly colored. Known for being one of the more reef-compatible triggerfish, this species is a standout in larger community tanks.

Care Highlights:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 125 gallons for ample swimming room and aquascaping stability 

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive but among the mildest of triggerfish; reef-safe with caution occasionally picks at shrimp or small inverts

  • Diet: Carnivorous. Offer a variety of meaty foods like mysis, squid and clams; include hard-shelled items to help wear down continuously growing teeth.

  • Habitat: Indo-Pacific distribution, typically inhabits current-swept outer reefs; enjoys ample cover and lives in small groups 

  • Behavior: May use dorsal spine as a “lock” to wedge into crevices when stressed or to rest
