DESCRIPTION:

 

The Lawnmower Blenny (Salarias fasciatus), also known as the Jewelled or Sailfin Blenny, is a charismatic reef-safe fish prized for its algae-grazing behavior and quirky personality. Every specimen is fully quarantined for 30 days at our Pennsauken, NJ facility before shipping to ensure peak health. Ideal for established reef tanks, this hardy blenny actively grazes on detritus and microalgae while evading predators with its agile, rock-hugging movement.

  • Care Level: Easy – beginner-friendly and highly adaptable

  • Diet: Omnivore – grazes algae and detritus; accepts nori, spirulina, and herbivore pellets 

  • Temperament: Semi-territorial – best kept solo, may chase other similar blennies 

  • Tank Size: 55 gallons or larger – needs plenty of live rock and algae growth 

  • Max Size: Approximately 5.5 inches (14 cm) 

  • Compatibility: Generally reef-safe; may nip SPS or clam mantles lightly 

  • Origin: Indo-Pacific (Red Sea to Samoa)

  • Notes: Secure lid strongly recommended—they’re known jumpers. Long-term grazing helps reduce algae issues on glass and detritus in the tank.
