DESCRIPTION:

Randall’s Assessor (Assessor randalli) is a rare and intriguing basslet known for its vibrant coloration, quiet temperament, and unique hovering behavior. This species hovers near reef crevices and caves and is one of the more exotic choices among reef hobbyists.

Each fish from TSM Aquatics undergoes full quarantine and conditioning to ensure a healthy, aquarium-adapted specimen.

Care Essentials:

  • Tank Size: 30 gallons minimum for a single; larger tanks are ideal for stability and comfort.

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive toward conspecifics or similar shaped fish. Best kept singly or in a well spaced setup.

  • Diet: Carnivore. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and planktonic preparations.

  • Reef Compatibility: Reef safe. Does not bother corals or invertebrates under normal conditions.

  • Behavior & Habitat: Prefers shaded rock overhangs, caves, and ledges. Known to swim upside down beneath ledges. Provide ample rock work for hiding and perching.

  • Water Conditions: Maintain reef parameters: temperature 75-78 °F, salinity 1.020-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4.

  • Special Notes: Stressed assessors may jump—use a secure cover. Males guard eggs in their mouth (mouthbrooders).

This rare and captivating species is an excellent choice for advanced reef aquarists seeking a standout basslet with elegant behavior and bold presence.
