DESCRIPTION:

The Saddleback Butterflyfish (Chaetodon ephippium), also called the Saddled Butterflyfish, is a striking Indo-Pacific species featuring a bold black saddle with a white border, blue horizontal stripes, and vivid yellow accents. It adds elegance and movement to marine tanks and catches eyes with its dramatic coloration.

Care & Compatibility:

  • Tank Size: Requires a minimum of 125 gallons (375 L) to accommodate its active, streamlined swimming behavior and encourages natural grazing habits. LiveAquaria+15Reef App+15Alamy+15LiveAquaria

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; best kept singly or as a pair, but only if introduced properly.

  • Reef Safety: Not considered reef-safe, this species may nip at coral polyps, clams, and small invertebrates.

  • Diet: Omnivorous, requires a varied diet of meaty foods (mysis, brine shrimp, clam, sponge), spirulina algae, and occasional live anemones, along with grazing on filamentous algae. Frequent feedings required at first.

  • Behavior: Can live singly or in pairs; pairs should be introduced simultaneously to minimize aggression. Adults may form monogamous pairs.

  • Long-Term Care: Demands stable, established systems, hiding places among live rock, consistent water quality, and proper acclimation, especially challenging for juveniles.
